BANK EXAMS GENERAL ENGLISH PRACTICE QUESTIONS

Sentence completion exercises
We have seen in detail the KE method which is useful to answer the exercises on sentence completion in our previous session. By recollecting the clues that have been suggested in the last session let us practice some exercises.
1. The villagers ________ the death of their leader by keeping all the shops closed.
a) Consoled
b) avenged
c) mourned
d) protested
Here the answer is (C), 'mourned' because the word in use for expressing sorrow over the death of someone is 'mourn'. This is a matter of usage.

2. While on a routine flight, the aircraft was hit by a missile and ______ into flames
a) Shot
b) burst
c) caught
d) blew
Here the answer is (B), 'burst' because all other words are not in keeping with 'into' and thus they are eliminated at the first stage- structure.

3. Authority _____ when it is not supported by the moral purity of its users.
a) Empowers
b) crumbles
c) prevails
d) waits
The answer is (B), 'crumbles' because other alternatives are eliminated at Stage 2-meaning. 'Empower' is opposite in meaning, 'prevails' is also oppo-site in meaning and 'waits' is not in accord with the meaning. Thus the only choice left is 'crumbles'.

a) Dissent
b) disfavor
c) divergence

The answer is (A), 'dissent', because other alternatives may have similar meanings, but 'dissent', is the word in use for showing agreement to an idea or a proposal. So other alternatives are eliminated at Stage 3.

A man called Ramaya lived in a small village. Despite being a nice man, he did not have any friends. It was well known in the town that anyone unfortunate enough to look at him first thing in the morning would not be able to have food that day. That was why no one in the town liked encountering Ramaya in the morning, if they could help it. As soon as the king heard this rumour he decided to try it out himself.

He summoned Ramaya to the palace and ordered him to sleep in a room adjacent to his bedchamber. Ramaya had no choice but to follow the king’s order. He feared that the rumour would come true. The next
morning, the first thing the king did after waking up, was to take a look at Ramaya. When the king reached the breakfast table, he saw that the royal chef had forgotten to prepare his favourite dish. This angered him and he refused to have breakfast. After finishing a few important duties in the court, the king went to the dining hall for lunch. The food arrived piping hot. The king had hardly picked up the first morsel when he caught sight of a fly in the food. He left the table in disgust and when the food was prepared again for him, he found that he had lost his appetite. At the dinner table, an ignorant minister started eating before the king had started. This offended the king. He stormed out of the dining hall and refused to come back. As a result, the king could not eat anything at all that day. The enraged king was now convinced that Ramaya was really jinxed. He ordered that Ramaya be hanged. In those days the king’s word was the law. The soldiers had no option but to take Ramaya to the gallows. While on their way to the gallows, they met the court jester. He heard the story from Ramaya. The jester felt that it was an unfair decision and that none of this was Ramaya’s fault. He came up with a plan to save Ramaya from being hanged. He whispered something in Ramaya’s ears. Ramaya nodded before being whisked away.

It was mandatory to grant one last wish to the person who was being hanged. When the soldiers asked Ramaya about his last wish, he asked them to convey a message to the king. He also requested that he be hanged only after hearing the king’s response. “Tell the king that while it may be true that anyone who sees my face first thing in the morning does not get anything to eat that day, it’s also true that if anyone sees the king’s face first thing in the morning, as I did, he has to lose his life. So who’s the greater jinx - the king or I ?” said Ramaya.

On hearing the message, the king was stunned. He realised his foolishness and ordered his soldiers to stop the execution. He summoned Ramaya and offered him gifts. He also requested Ramaya not to say anything about the incident to the public. He was sure that the people of the village wouldn’t take well to the idea of having a jinxed person for a ruler. Ramaya agreed. When the villagers saw Ramaya returning with the gifts, they assumed that the rumour was false and that the king had given the gifts to Ramaya as compensation. They were ashamed of their behaviour and swore that they would never ignore Ramaya.

Hearty monsoons have fattened farmers’ profits. For rich and poor farmers alike, education is within closer reach. Ten years ago, the area that had three schools; now has five. Long ago, the country of Gandhara was ruled by a just and good king Vidyadhara. His subjects were very happy, but as the king grew older, everyone grew more and more worried because the king did not have any children who could take over the kingdom after him. The king was an avid gardener. He spent a lot of time tending to his garden, planting the finest flowers, fruit trees and vegetables. One day, after he finished working in his garden, he proclaimed, ‘I will distribute some seeds to all the children in the kingdom. The one who grows the biggest, healthiest plant within three months will become the prince or the princess.’

The next day there was a long queue of anxious parents and children outside the palace. Everyone was eager to get a seed and grow the best plant. Pingala, a poor farmer’s son, was among the children. Some weeks passed and he plied it with water and manure, but the plant did not appear. At last the day came when all the children had to go to the king to show the plant they had grown. They went walking to the palace dressed in their best, holding beautiful plants in their hands. Only Pingala stood sadly, watching them go by. Pingala’s father had watched his son working hard with the seed and felt sorry for him. ‘Why don’t you go to the king with your empty pot ?’ he suggested. ‘At least he will know you tried your best.’ So Pingala too wore his best suit and joined the others outside the palace, holding his empty pot in his hand and ignoring the laughter around him. Soon the king arrived and began his inspection. The pots held flowers of different shades, beautiful and healthy, but the king did not look happy. At the end of the queue stood Pingala, and when the king reached him, he stopped in surprise.

‘My son, why have you come with an empty pot ? Could you not grow anything ?’ Pingala looked down and said, ‘Forgive me, your highness. I tried my best, I gave it the best soil and manure I had, but the plant would
not grow.’

Now the king’s face broke into a smile. He enveloped Pingala in his arms and announced, ‘This boy truly deserves to be crowned the prince ! I had given everyone roasted seeds, which would never grow. I am sure he will rule this kingdom one day with truth and honesty.’

Once upon a time, there was a stork that lived by catching fish from a particular tank. As the years went by, the stork grew older and weaker and its ability to catch fish diminished. At times it would even starve. The stork knew that it had to do something to survive.

One day it stood by the side of the tank with a very forlorn look on its face. The frogs, fish and crabs wondered why it was not trying to catch any food. A big crab asked the stork what the matter was. The stork answered that it was sad because all the fish in the tank were going to die and so it would have to starve. The stork said that it had heard that people were going to fill the tank with mud and grow crops over it. The fish were very worried and asked the stork to help them.

The stork offered to take all of them to a bigger tank some distance away. But it said that it needed to rest between trips because of old age. It would only be able to carry a few fish at a time.

On its first trip, the stork took a beakful of fish. It flew to a big rock and had a good meal. Thereafter, it rested for a while, and when it was hungry again, the stork took a second trip. In this manner, the stork took a trip each time it was hungry.

The big crab in the tank also wanted to save itself and it requested the stork to take it too. The stork thought it was a good idea to try a new dish. It agreed to take the crab on its next trip.

After the stork flew up with the crab, the crab looked down to see what the new surroundings would be like. All it could see was dry land. When the crab questioned the stork about this, the stork laughed wickedly and pointed to the rock below where the crab saw a heap of fish bones. The crab realized that it was to be the stork’s next meal. So the crab dug its claws into the stork’s neck and would not let go till the stork fell to the ground and died. The crab then cut off the stork’s head and returned home to show it to all the other fish and share the story of its adventure with the stork.

Once, there was a boy who was afraid of the dark. He thought that when it was dark his bedroom filled up with monsters. But there came a time when he was too old to be allowed to keep. sleeping with the light on. That first night he was paralysed with fear , and his mind was full of monsters. So much so, that he went over to his wardrobe to get a torch. But when he opened the wardrobe door he came face to face
with a monster, and he let out the loudest scream in the world. 

The monster was equally shocked. It grabbed its multicoloured hair and started crying. The monster cried for so long that the boy's shock and fear subsided. He calmed the monster as much as he could, and started talking to him, asking him why he was crying, and what he was doing there. The monster told him it lived in the wardrobe, but never went out, because it was afraid of the boy. When the boy asked for the reason, the monster told that the boy's face seemed to be the most horrible thing it had ever seen with eyes, ears and a nose. The boy felt exactly the same way about the monster, who had an enormous head full of hair.

Eventually, they realized that both of them had been afraid of the same thing: the unknown. To lose their fear of each other all they had to do was get to know each other. They applied the same strategy to the other things. Together they travelled the world, seeing lions, tigers, crocodiles and even dragons. It was the first time either of them had seen such creatures, but they made the effort to get to know them, and ended up dispelling their fear, and becoming friends. All kinds of creatures visited the boy's bedroom each night and, instead of fearing them he learnt to get to know them and befriend them.
